Kwale youth to benefit from three-year civic education programme

Youth in Kwale County are set to gain valuable leadership skills and a deeper understanding of governance principles through a newly launched three-year civic education programme.

Launched by the Muslim Women Advancement of Rights and Protection (MWARP) last Friday, the initiative aims to empower youth, women, and people living with disabilities to actively participate in governance and economic development processes.

Mwalimu Ali, coordinator of MWARP, highlighted the programme's objectives, emphasising the need to address historical grievances of exclusion among marginalised groups in development projects at both county and national levels.

"For many years, youth, women, and people living with disabilities have lamented their marginalisation in critical development initiatives. It is with this concern in mind that we have rolled out this programme," said Ali.

He explained that the initiative seeks to foster inclusivity by preparing marginalised groups for future leadership roles and enhancing their participation in decision-making processes.

Ali underscored the organisation's commitment to nurturing capable and accountable leaders who actively champion social justice and economic prosperity for all members of society.

"Our approach involves educating and empowering leaders within these targeted groups, equipping them with the knowledge of policy-making processes and enabling them to undertake oversight roles," Ali stated.

He emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, asserting that informed participation not only benefits individuals but also enhances the overall development landscape of the country.

Nasra Salim, a beneficiary of the programme, expressed gratitude for the newfound opportunities and insights gained through the initiative.

"This programme has inspired us to take an active role in shaping our community's development. We now understand our responsibilities in public participation," Nasra said.

Hemedi Hamisi echoed Nasra's sentiments, highlighting how the programme has equipped him with the necessary tools to engage effectively in governance processes.

"The knowledge gained has empowered us to advocate for transparent leadership and to contribute meaningfully to our community's progress," Hemedi said.

The initiative is poised to bridge gaps in representation, ensuring that all segments of society have a voice in steering the course of their communities' future development.
